Dealing with deadlines

It seems that lately I've been working against a couple of deadlines. My stitching time (to say nothing of blogging time) has disappeared as I've been trying to bake, decorate, buy, wrap, and write cards in preparation for Christmas. I'm happy to say that the baking, cards, and buying are done, though I still have to finish some decorating and wrapping over the next few days!

When it comes to stitching, though, I try not to set deadlines. Occasionally I'll have one for finishing a correspondence course, but I haven't even been trying to meet those this year! I have a standing policy when stitching for gifts: if I'm making something for Mom for Christmas, there's nothing that says it has to be this Christmas. I'll give it to her for the Christmas after it gets finished. Of course, this doesn't work too well for wedding gifts, but it does work for birthdays and holidays.

I'm curious. Who else does this? Do you set deadlines for your stitching, or are you of the "it gets done when it gets done" mindset?

However, I do have a stitching deadline looming now. This one has nothing to do with Christmas. Rather it has everything to do with one week later. Recall that I've already added '2009' on my How Great the Blessing from Catherine Theron. See the arrow in the picture. I really don't want to pull it out, so I'm trying to finish by the end of the month. Fortunately, I've made decent progress since I last posted about this piece, and I'm on vacation for the rest of the year. I'm really hoping to make it!

And what a splendid finish to end the year with. Ten more days to go - you can do it!

Hi Jeanne, coming along very nicely. Rarely any deadlines here, much more pleasurable that way. Wishing you and yours a very Happy Holiday and all the very best in 2010 my friend:)

Mmmmm. I really should stop trying to stitch to a deadline as I rarely make it. I guess I do best if I stitch, then wait a couple of years to finish. LOL. What I am going to do, though, is send the stitched gifts when I finish them rather than waiting for birthdays and holidays. Otherwise I will end up with more hooked rugs that I made for my nephew and that will be finished for his son twenty years later!

I'm another who finishes when it's finished. I'm terrible with deadlines and except for the occasional ornament swap, I do NOT try to make specific dates.

Very pretty! Hope you get it finished. I am in the same boat with my This is the Day, by Hands to Work. I've already stitched '09, over one on 40 count no less. I am racing to finish it.

Yours is beautiful. I need to get mine out and finish it. I took a class with Katherine a number of years ago through the Lake Michigan Sampler Guild and have not worked on it since. Yours is an inspiration to me so will search for it and working on it again.

Hi Jeanne,

I agree on the gift giving. If it doesn't get done for this Christmas, there's always next! :-)

I don't worry about stitching to deadlines as I'm stitching for fun. Plus as soon as I give myself a deadline, life or work goes nuts. LOL!

The only time I've stitched to deadlines is when I've volunteered to stitch something for ANG for the auction. And I don't do that every year. :-)

I would say that since you stitched most of it this year, it doesn't really have to be finished by December 31, 2009. You can make your own rules and one can be, if it's over 75% finished in one year, it counts. LOL!
